Olympians recall first encounter with volleyball

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 3, 2020 – We asked the people on Instagram to share the first time they played volleyball, and the fans and some players responded with great enthusiasm.

Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist Bruno Rezende and London 2012 silver medallist Jennifer Kessy reflected on the moment that started their involvement with the sport.

“My mom was still playing until she was five months pregnant with me, so I was born inside the court,” said Bruno on being destined to play volleyball.

Bruno’s mom, Vera Mossa, is a three-time Olympian. His dad, Bernardinho, earned an Olympic silver medal as a player and two Olympic gold medals as the head coach of Brazil in 2004 and 2016.

The 42-year-old Kessy won 10 FIVB beach volleyball events and won the Olympic silver medal with April Ross at London 2012, then retired after the 2015 season.

“P.E. class in 7th grade and the black top. Hooked ever since,” Kessy said.

Now Kessy is a mother of two girls and coaching her former partner Ross and Alix Klineman.

Meanwhile, USA men’s volleyball players Erik and Kawika Shoji, Micah Christenson and Kupono Fey had their first training in Hawaii since the lockdown.
