Huber and Dressler out to upset favourites in Baden in semis

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 9, 2019 – Alexander Huber and Christoph Dressler will need to defeat 2018 gold medallists Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst if they want to reach the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Baden 1-Star gold medal match on Monday.

It is the second year that the Austrian town has hosted a World Tour event and it runs from June 6 to June 10 with the winning teams claiming $7,500 in prize money.

On Sunday Austrians Huber and Dressler lined up a semifinal against their compatriots Doppler and Horst by defeating Poland’s Mariusz Prudel and Mikolaj Miszczuk 2-0 (21-28, 21-18) in front of 1,800 fans at the Baden Stadium.

Doppler and Horst maintained their progress by beating Turkey’s Selcuk Sekerci and Safa Urlu 2-1 (21-18, 23-25, 15-12).

“The crowd is just amazing, and we feel the same noise as in Vienna even though the stadium here is much smaller,” Doppler said. “It is very important for us to feel the fans, especially in such a tight game.”

In the other semifinals Spanish qualifiers Alejandro Huerta and Cesar Menendez wil face Russia’s Maxim Sivolap and Artem Yarzutkin.

Huerta and Menedez beat Austria’s Martin Ermacora and Moritz Pristauz 2-0 (21-16, 21-18), while Sivolap and Yarzutkin defeated Latvia’s Toms Smedins and Haralds Regza 2-0 (21-10, 21-18).
