Jakopin and Bozenk celebrate home gold in Ljubljana

Ljubljana, Slovenia, August 4, 2019 – Vid Jakopin and Tadej Bozenk defeated Nejc Zemljak and Jan Pokersnik in the tiebreaker of the exciting all-Slovenian finale of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour in front of their home fans in Ljubljana on Sunday.

Zemljak and Pokersnik delighted the Ljubljana crowd as they defeated Dutch pair Yorick de Groot/Mees Bloom 2-1 (21-16, 14-21, 15-7), then the home fans got more excited as another Slovenian pair (Jakopin/Bozenk) advanced to the final with a dramatic 2-1 (21-16, 16-21, 17-15) win against Austria’s Florian Ertl/Johannes Kratz.

The clash of these two Slovenian sides in the final was a true crowd pleaser, with Jakopin and Bozenk taking all the glory in the end with a 2-1 (16-21, 21-18, 15-11) victory over Zemljak and Pokersnik.

“Our goal was to reach the semifinals,” Bozenk said. “We definitely did not expect to win the tournament. We went game by game and tried not to put too much pressure on ourselves. It was a great match and maybe we were a bit luckier at the end.”

“We had no pressure but I am sure that it was a completely different situation for the opponents,” Jakopin added. “We took advantage of our chance and finished at the top.”

The bronze medal match became a Dutch affair as Blom and De Groot came up with a solid 2-0 (21-18, 21-18) win over Ertl and Kratz.

“It was a good match. I think all of us were a bit tired after the semis. Although we did not deliver our best performance, we kept playing, leading and at the end we won. It feels great to claim the bronze medal at the end. The centre court in Ljubljana is great. We loved it! With so much support from the stands we felt like we were playing at home,” Blom said.
