Boehle and Boermans beat French pair for Montpellier gold

 
Montpellier, France, August 31, 2019 – The Netherlands’ Dirk Boehle and Stefan Boermans defeated France’s Quincy Aye and Arnaud Gauthier-Rat in straight sets to win the gold medal in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Montpellier 1-star on Saturday.



The day started with straight-set victories for Boehle/Boermans and Aye/Gauthier-Rat over Austria’s Arwin Kopschar/Michael Murauer (21-12, 21-15) and Florian Schnetzer/Laurenz Leitner (21-15, 21-17), respectively, in the semifinal round.

In the gold medal match, the Frenchmen held a slim lead at the start but the Dutch pair fought hard for every point until they gained the two-point winning edge in the opening set at 25-23.

The Dutch duo pushed their rivals hard from the start of the second set, establishing a big lead that prevented their rivals from staging a comeback. Finally, the home team succumbed to the aggressiveness unleashed by the visiting side at 21-15.

In the bronze medal match, Schnetzer and Leitner dictated the tempo in the first set to win with a comfortable lead against their compatriots Kopschar and Murauer at 21-15, but the latter kept their hopes alive as they gained the two-point edge to close out the extended second set at 27-25.

By the third set, Schnetzer and Leitner reorganised their offence to set up a four-point lead at 11-7, then fortified it with a great side-out game to gain four more points for the bronze medal victory at 15-8.
