Russians “sharpen” Poles on Copacabana

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 7, 2016 - Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Konstantin Semenov played one of their best matches in recent weeks here Sunday by posting a win over Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel of Poland in a late night Rio 2016 Olympic Beach Volleyball match.

Except for trailing early in the opening set, Krasilnikov and Semenov had very few errors in posting a 2-0 (21-14, 21-13) Pool E win in 40 minutes over Fijalek and Prudel.  It was the third international meeting between the two teams and the first since June of 2014.  With Semenov having seven blocks in the match, the Russians now lead 2-1 the series with the Poles 2-1.

Both teams will have Monday off and resume play Tuesday with Russians playing the Grimalt cousins (Esteban and Marco) while Fijalek and Prudel challenge group top seeds Reinder Nummerdor and Christiaan Varenhorst of The Netherlands.  The Dutch opened Olympic play Sunday with a 2-0 (21-16, 21-13) win in 39 minutes over the Grimalts.
