Ross and Walsh Jennings focusing on own strengths

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 12, 2016 – USA’s Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross progressed to the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games quarterfinals after they defeated Italy’s Marta Menegatti and Laura Giombini 2-0 (21-10, 21-16) at the Copacabana Beach Arena on Friday.

Here’s what they said after the match…

April Ross, United States
“It was a little nerve-wracking just because, number one I think they had the factor of a team that had nothing to lose. We had to take that into account. We also had to take into account what they were like defensively because she (Giombini) is a blocker.

“What they made us do was focus on us and we were going to play to our strengths.

“I worked with our coach, watched some video and did some things tactically different and I want to really look at my game individually. I love how we are playing as a team and I just want to get better.”

Laura Giombini, Italy
“It has been a crazy seven days, but having Marta by side meant I didn’t feel any nerves. I am delighted, but this close to the end of the match I am a bit disappointed.”
