2016 FIVB World Tour update after men’s FIVB Qatar Open in Doha

Lausanne, Switzerland, April 11, 2016 — Following the last of three events for men only, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) leaves Qatar for the second of three events in Asia that are part of eight consecutive weeks of tournaments.

With the qualifying process for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in full swing, the 2016 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour follows up last week’s men’s only FIVB Qatar Open in Doha with twin double-gender stops in China at the $150,000 FIVB Xiamen Open this week and at the $150,000 FIVB Fuzhou Open (April 19-23).

Last week saw a team from Italy win the men’s gold medal at the men's only $75,000 FIVB Qatar Open in Doha. It was the eighth men’s event on the 2016 FIVB World Tour. There have been five women’s events to date on the 2016 FIVB World Tour. All of the remaining events on the 2016 FIVB World Tour are double gender events.

QATAR MEN
In the men’s competition this past week in Qatar, winning the gold medal with an unblemished 7-0 record was Italy’s seventh-seeded Adrian Carambula/Alex Ranghieri who won the gold medal match in straight sets over Austria’s surprising 21st-seeded Alexander Huber/Robin Seidl, 21-17, 21-17 in just 37 minutes.

It was the second FIVB World Tour gold medal as a team for Italy’s youthful Carambula/Ranghieri and the first FIVB career silver medal for Austria’s Huber/Seidl.

In the men’s bronze medal match in Doha, winning was Poland’s sixth-seeded Piotr Kantor/Bartosz Losiak who won by injury forfeit over defending FIVB Qatar Open champions Markus Bockermann/Lars Fluggen of Germany.

In the Doha men’s semifinals, Italy’s Carambula/Ranghieri overpcame Poland’s Kantor/Losiak, 27-25, 21-14 in 40 minutes and Austria’s Huber/Seidl advanced to the gold medal match when they won by forfeit over Germany’a Bockermann/Fluggen after Fluggen couldn’t continue because of a knee injury sustained in that semifinal match with the Austrians.

VITORIA WOMEN
In the women’s competition in their last stop in Brazil at the FIVB Vitória Open, Brazil’s top-seeded Talita Antunes/Larissa Franca compiled a perfect 7-0 record and moved them to 13-2 for the year as they topped USA’s second-seeded April Ross/Kerri Walsh Jennings, winning the gold medal match in two challenging sets, 22-20, 21-19 in 39 masterful minutes.

In 19 events as a team since forming their partnership in 2014, Brazil’s Talita/Larissa now have a 106-10 record as a team (13-2 in 2016) by winning their 12th FIVB gold medal in just 19 starts . It was Talita’s 30th career FIVB gold medal and 74th career FIVB World Tour finish (14 silver, 14 bronze 15 fourth place finishes) and for Larissa, it was her FIVB-record 58th career gold medal and her 100th career final four finish (20 silver, 17 bronze, five fourths).

In their second FIVB World Tour event since last September when Walsh Jennings had her fifth shoulder surgery, it was the second FIVB silver medal and 11th final four finish in 22 FIVB World Tour events as a team (seven gold, one bronze, one fourth place). In their FIVB careers, it was the 48th final four finish for Ross including her 14th silver medal (17 gold, 10 bronze, seven fourth places). For Walsh Jennings, it was 80th final four finish and her 17th career FIVB silver medal (51 gold, 8 bronze, four fourth places).

In the women’s bronze medal match in Vitória, Germany’s 17th-seeded Katrin Holtwick/Ilka Semmler came from behind to upset Australia’s fourth-seeded Louise Bawden/Taliqua Clancy, 20-22, 21-17 and 15-11 in 50 minutes.

To reach the women’s gold medal match in Vitória, in their semifinals, Brazil’s Talita/Larissa stopped Australia’s Bawden/Clancy in straight sets, 21-16, 21-16 in 36 minutes USA’s Ross/Walsh Jennings defeated Germany’s Holtwick/Semmler, 21-19, 21-16 in just 32 minutes.

MEN’S WINNERS SHARE
Last week’s FIVB Qatar Open men’s champions Carambula/Ranghieri of Italy picked up the FIVB Open gold medal purse of $11,000. Austria’s runner-up Huber/Seidl earned $8,000 in prize money while Poland’s bronze medalists Kantor/Losiak earned $6,000 and Germany’s Bockermann/Fluggen received $4,500 in prize money for their fourth place finish.

WOMEN’S WINNERS ROLL
FIVB Vitória Open women’s champions Talita/Larissa of Brazil earned the winner’s $11,000 purse. USA’s Ross/Walsh Jennings collected the runner-up $8,000 purse to split from their silver medal placement and Germany’s Holtwick/Semmler earned $6,000 for their bronze medal finish. Australia’s fourth-place finishers Bawden/Clancy earned $4,500 in prize money.

After eight men’s events on the 2016 FIVB World Tour, Poland’s Kantor/Losiak tandem continue to lead the FIVB World Tour point standings with 2,920 points. Italy’s Carambula/Ranghieri is second in the standings with 2,610. Germany’s Markus Bockermann/Lars Fluggen duo is third with 2,280 points, fourth is USA’s Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena with 1,930. Fifth with 1,730 points is France’s Youssef Krou/Eduard Rowlandson and Mexico’s Lombardo Ontiveros/Juan Virgen duo is sixth with 1,650 points.

In the 2016 FIVB World Tour men’s season earnings after eight events, Poland’s Kantor/Losiak tandem leads with $81,750. Brazil’s Evandro Goncalves/Pedro Solberg duo is second with $51,000 and Italy’s Carambula/ Ranghieri tandem is third with $47,265. USA’s Dalhausser/Lucena duo is. Fifth is Netherlands’ Alexander Brouwer/Robert Meeuwsen with $46,000 and sixth is Germany’s Bockermann/Fluggen with $35,750. Seventh is Poland’s Gregorz Fijalek/Mariusz Prudel with $31,375, eighth is Brazil’s Alison Cerutti/Bruno Oscar Schmidt with $28,000, ninth is France’s Krou/Rowlandson with $27,900 and Mexico’s Ontiveros/Virgin is 10th with $27,750.

For the women after five 2016 FIVB World Tour events, Italy’s Marta Menegatti/Viktoria Orsi Toth continues at the top of the point leader board with 1,870 points, Switzerland’s Isabelle Forrer/Anouk Verge-Depre duo is second with 1,460 points while Brazil’s Eduarda Lisboa/Elize Maia is third with 1,350 points. Fourth is Argentina’s Ana Gallay/Georgina Klug with 1,340 points, fifth with 1,300 points is Germany’s Holtwick/Semmler, sixth is Germany’s Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhorst tandem with 1,280 points and seventh with 1,250 points is USA’ Ross/Walsh Jennings.

In the 2016 FIVB World Tour women’s season earnings after five events, USA’s Ross/Walsh Jennings continue in the top spot with $65,000, while second with $45,000 is Poland’s Monika Brzostek/Kinga Kolosinska and third is Germany’s Borger/Buthe with $38,750. Fourth is Italy’s Marta Menegatti/Viktoria Orsi Toth eith $36,375 and Germany’s Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhorst is fifth with $31,375. Sixth in the money standings is Switzerland’s Forrer/Verge-Depre with $31,200, seventh with $25,000 in earnings is Brazil’s Eduarda Lisboa/Elize Maia, eighth is now Brazil’s Talita/Larissa with $24,000 and ninth with $23,000 in prize money is Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk/Barbara Seixas.

MEN’S FINAL FOURS
After eight men’s tournaments on the 2016 FIVB World Tour schedule, 12 countries have at least one final four placement. Co-leaders with five final four placements each are Brazil (one gold, two silver medals, one bronze, one fourth place finish) and Poland (one gold medal, two bronze, two fourth places). Tied for third with four final four placements each so far are Italy (two gold medals, one silver medal, one fourth place) and the United States (two gold medals, one silver medal, one bronze medal). Tied for fifth with three final four placements each are Germany (one gold medal, one bronze medal, one fourth) and Italy (two gold medals, one fourth place) and the Netherlands (one silver medal, two bronze). Tied for seventh with one medal each are Austria (one silver medal), Chile (one fourth place), Latvia (one bronze medal), Mexico (one silver medal), Qatar (one gold medal) and Russia (one silver medal).

Sixth at 74.1% is Brazil’s Eduarda/Elise (20-7), seventh at 72.2% is Germany’s Karla Borger/Britta Buthe (13-5), seventh at 71.4% is Czech Republic’s Barbora Hermannova/Marketa Slukova (15-6) and eighth at 70.0% is Italy’s Menegatti/Orsi Toth (21-9).

For the women in match wins following five events on the 2016 FIVB calendar, leading with 21 match wins is Italy’s Menegatti/Orsi Toth (21-9) while second in match wins with 20 is Brazil’s Eduarda/Elize (20-7) and third with 16 match wins is Germany’s Chantal Laboureur/Julia Sude (16-5). Tied for fourth with 15 wins each are Germany’s Ludwig/Walkenhorst (15-2), Czech Republic’s Marketa Slukova/Barbora Hermannova (15-6) and Argentina’s Gallay/Klug (15-12).

ON THE HORIZON
With placement points for the FIVB Olympic Rankings for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games continuing, the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour has resumed with events over eight straight weeks through the end of May. In all, Brazil is hosting five international events in 2016. In addition to Maceió, Rio and Vitória will be the FIVB Fortaleza Open (April 26-May 1) and the Brazil events conclude with the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Aug. 6-18).

The FIVB World Tour has three events in Asia that started with the men’s only FIVB Qatar Open in Doha (April 4-8). The tour now continues with a pair of double gender events in China at the FIVB Xiamen Open (April 12-16) and the FIVB Fuzhou Open (April 19-23) before returning to Brazil for the FIVB Fortaleza Open.

GROWING HISTORY
The FIVB Qatar Open in Doha was the 337th men’s tournament since the FIVB began play in 1987. There have been 298 FIVB women’s tournaments since their competition started in 1992.

FIVB 2016
Based in Lausanne, Switzerland as the international governing body for the Olympic sports of Beach Volleyball and Volleyball, the 2016 FIVB Beach Volleyball calendar featured a purse of US$8.8 million with a season that extended from last October to this October, competing at 23 venues in 13 countries. The schedule includes five FIVB Grand Slams, three Swatch FIVB Major Series events, 14 FIVB Opens and the special Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals in the United States. The showcase event will be the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil (Aug. 6-18).

The 2015 portion of the 2016 FIVB World Tour calendar started in October in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and included two more open events prior to the remainder of the schedule resuming at the FIVB Kish Island Open in Iran in February.

ROAD TO RIO
The Olympic qualification process began in 2015 with all FIVB World Tour events (except the Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals) in 2015 up until June 13, 2016 counting towards the Olympic Ranking in order to determine 15 spots for each gender that will take part in each 24-team field in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Copacabana Beach in Brazil in August. Counting the FIVB Rio Grand Slam, 10 men’s and eight women’s events remain on the Olympic qualifying calendar for the FIVB World Tour.

FIVB WORLD TOUR PURSES
The five FIVB Grand Slam and three Swatch FIVB Major Series competitions in 2016, all double-gender, each have $800,000 in total purses. The total of $500,000 will be the purse for the Swatch FIVB World Tour Season Final which will feature the top eight teams in each gender and two wild card teams.

The 14 FIVB Open tournaments on 2016 calendar, 11 double-gender, and three men’s only, have $150,000 total purses for the double gender events and $75,000 for the single-gender competitions.

The gold medal teams in each gender at FIVB Grand Slam and Swatch FIVB Major Series events split $57,000, the silver $43,000, the bronze $32,000 and fourth place $24,000. The gold medal teams in each gender at FIVB Open tournaments each split $11,000, the silver $8,000, the bronze $6,000 and fourth place $4,500.

FIVB EVENT FORMAT
Implemented in 2013, the format of all the FIVB Beach Volleyball international tournaments – whether FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam or FIVB Beach Volleyball Open – are the same, featuring pool play followed by single elimination knockout rounds. Country Quota playoffs returned as needed in 2015 to determine the final teams for the qualification tournament.
