2016 FIVB World Tour update following FIVB Maceió Open in Brazil

Lausanne, Switzerland, February 29, 2016 — Following the first of three straight events in Brazil, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) takes a brief week off from the 2016 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour before heading to the site of the 2016 Olympic Games for the $800,000 FIVB Rio Grand Slam.

With the qualifying process for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games fully resumed, the 2016 FIVB World Tour stop last week was the double-gender FIVB Maceió Open.

Last week saw a team from the United States win the men’s gold medal and a team from Brazil win the women’s gold medal at the $150,000 FIVB Maceió Open in Iran. It was the fourth men’s event and third women’s event on the 2016 FIVB World Tour.

MACEIO MEN
In the men’s competition this past week in Brazil, winning the gold medal with a perfect 7-0 record was USA’s second-seeded Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena won the gold medal match in three sets over Brazil’s top-seeded Evandro Goncalves/Pedro Solberg, 21-19, 19-21 and 15-12 in 55 minutes. It was the 32nd career FIVB World Tour title for Dalhausser and third for Lucena, all together since reuniting last August.

In the bronze medal match in Maceió, it was an all-Brazilian battle on their home sand with 28th-seeded qualification team Saymon Barbosa/Gustavo Carvalhaes defeating 11th-seeded compatriots Vitor Felipe/Alvaro Filho in straight sets as well, 21-18, 25-23 in 55 minutes.

In the Maceió semifinals, USA’s Dalhausser/Lucena were extended to three sets to defeat Brazil’s Felipe/Filho, 21-17, 20-22 and 15-12 in 58 minutes and Brazil’s Evandro/Pedro defeated compatriots Saymon/Gustavo, 21-18, 21-16 in just 38 minutes to advance to the gold medal match.

MACEIO WOMEN
In the women’s competition in Maceió, Brazil’s 22nd-seeded qualification team of Eduarda Lisboa/Elize Maia compiled a perfect 8-0 record, winning the gold medal match over Netherlands’ fifth-seeded Madelein Meppelink/Marleen Van Iersel, 21-10, 21-13 in just 33 minutes. It was the first career FIVB World Tour gold medal for both Eduarda/Elize. The new Brazilian tandem opened the 2016 FIVB World Tour with a silver medal in Mexico at the FIVB Puerto Vallarta Open last October.

In the women’s bronze medal match in Maceió, Brazil’s top-seeded reigning FIVB World Champions Agatha Bednarczuk/Barbara Seixas stopped Argentina Olympians Ana Gallay/Georgina Klug, who were seeded fourth in the tournament, 21-13, 21-15 in 37 minutes.

To reach the gold medal match in Maceió with their semifinal victories, Brazil’s Eduarda/Elize defeated Argentina’s Gallay/Klug, 21-16, 21-18 in 41 minutes while Netherlands’ Meppelink/Van Iersel won their semi over Brazil’s Agatha/Barbara, 21-14, 21-17 in 40 minutes. It was the second straight fourth-place finish to start the 2016 FIVB World Tour for Argentina’s Gallay/Klug who were also fourth last October in Turkey at the FIVB Antalya Open.

MEN’S WINNERS SHARE
Last week’s FIVB Maceió Open men’s champions Dalhausser/Lucena of the USA picked up the gold medal purse of $11,000. Brazil’s runner-up Evandro/Pedro earned $8,000 in prize money while Brazil’s bronze medalists Saymon/Gustavo earned $6,000 and Brazil’s Vitor/Alvaro received $4,500 in prize money for their fourth place finish.

WOMEN’S WINNERS ROLL
Last week’s FIVB Maceió Open women’s champions Eduarda/Elize of Brazil, earned the winner’s $11,000 purse. Netherlands’ Meppelink/Van Iersel collected the runner-up $8,000 purse to split from their silver medal placement and Brazil’s Agatha/Barbara earned $6,000 for their bronze medal finish. Argentina’s fourth place finishers Gallay/Klug won $4,500 in prize money.

MEN’S POINTS/EARNINGS
After five men’s events on the 2016 FIVB World Tour, Poland’s Piotr Kantor/Bartosz Losiak tandem leads the FIVB World Tour point standings with 1,480 points. USA’s Dalhausser/Lucena is second in the standings with 1,450. Third is Italy’s Adrian Carambula/Alex Ranghieri with 1,400 points, fourth with 1,390 points is Germany’s Markus Bockermann/Lars Fluggen duo and Latvia’s Martins Plavins/Haralds Regza duo is fifth with 1,240 points.

In the 2016 FIVB World Tour men’s season earnings after five events, USA’s Dalhausser/Lucena duo leads with $30,000. Second with $21,125 in prize winnings is Italy’s Carambula/Ranghieri, while third with $20,875 is Germany’s Bockermann/Fluggen and fourth is Poland’s Kantor/Losiak tandem with $16, 750. Fifth is Mexico’s Lombardo Ontiveros/Juan Virgen with $14,750 and sixth is Latvia’s M. Plavins/Regza with $12,400.

WOMEN’S POINTS/EARNINGS
For the women after three 2016 FIVB World Tour events, Italy’s Marta Menegatti/Viktoria Orsi Toth are at the top of the point list with 1,150 points, Argentina’s Gallay/Klug tandem is second with 1,000 points, third with 950 points for is Brazil’s Eduarda/Elize while fourth is Germany’s Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhorst with 800 points and Austria’s Barbara Hansel/Stefanie Schwaiger is fifth with 720 points.

In the 2016 FIVB World Tour women’s season earnings after three events, Brazil’s Eduarda/Elize is in the top spot with $19,000, while second with $17,375 is Italy’s Menegatti/Orsi Toth and Germany’s Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhorst is third with $14,375. Fourth with $12,375 is Argentina’s Gallay/Klug, fifth with $12,200 in 2016 FIVB earnings is Czech Republic’s Barbora Hermannova/Marketa Sluova and sixth with $8,000 is Netherlands’ Meppelink/Van Iersel.

MEN’S FINAL FOURS
In five men’s tournaments on the 2016 FIVB competition calendar, 11 countries have at least one final four placement. Leading with four final four placements is the United States (two gold medals, one silver medal, one bronze medal). Tied for second with three final four placements each are Brazil (one silver, one bronze, one fourth place finish), Germany (one gold medal, one bronze medal, one fourth). Fourth is Poland with two (one bronze, one fourth place). Tied for fifth with one each are Chile (one fourth place), Italy (one gold medal), Latvia (one bronze medal), Mexico (one silver medal), the Netherlands (one silver medal), Qatar (one gold medal) and Russia (one silver medal).

WOMEN’S FINAL FOURS
In three women’s FIVB international events on the 2016 calendar, seven countries have earned at least one final four finish. At the top with three final four placements is Brazil (one silver medal). Tied for second with two final fours each are Argentina (two fourth place finishes), Italy (one silver medal, one bronze) and the Netherlands (one silver, one fourth place finish). Tied for fifth with one each are, Czech Republic (one gold medal), Germany (one gold medal), and the United States (one bronze medal).

Based on percentage, statistically, in men’s action after five events on the 2016 FIVB World Tour calendar with a minimum of nine matches played, the leader at 95.2% is USA’s Dalhausser/Lucena (20-1) while second at 81.8% is Russia’s Oleg Stoyanowkiy/Artem Yarzutkin (9-2), third at 78.3% is Germany’s Bockermann/Fluggen (18-5), tied for fourth at 77.8% is Mexico’s Ontiveros/Virgen (14-4) and Germany’s Tim Holler/Jonas Schroder (7-2) and sixth at 77.3% is Italy’s Ranghieri/Carambula (17-5).

With 20 match wins each this season through five events, leading this category is USA’s Dalhausser/Lucena (20-1), second with 19 match wins is Poland’s Piotr Kantor/Bartosz Losiak (19-9), third with 18 wins is Germany’s Bockermann/Fluggen (18-5), while fourth with 17 is Italy’s Carambula/Ranghieri (17-5) and fifth with 15 wins is Austria’s Christoph Dressler/Thomas Kunert (15-11). Tied for sixth with 14 wins each are Canada’s Grant O’Garman/Sam Pedlow (14-10) and Latvia’s Martins Plavins/Haralds Regza (14-11).

WOMEN’S WINNING PERCENTAGE/MATCH WINS
Based on percentage, statistically, in women’s action after three events on the 2016 FIVB World Tour calendar with a minimum of six matches played, the leader at 91.7% is Germany’s Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhorst (11-1), second at 87.5% is Brazil’s Eduarda/Elise (14-2), third at 85.7% is Brazil’s Agatha/Barbara (6-1). Fourth at 81.8% is Czech Republic’s Barbora Hermannova/Marketa Slukova (9-2), while fifth at 75.0% is Italy’s Menegatti/Orsi Toth (15-5) and sixth at 72.7% is USA’s Jennifer Kessy/Emily Day (8-3).

For the women in match wins following three events on the 2016 FIVB calendar, leading with 15 match wins is Italy’s Menegatti/Orsi Toth (15-5) while second in match wins with 14 is Brazil’s Eduarda/Elize (14-2) and third with 13 match wins is Argentina’s Gallay/Klug (13-7). Fourth with 11 match wins is Germany’s Ludwig/Walkenhorst (11-1) and tied for fifth with nine wins each are Czech Republic’s Slukova/Hermannova (9-2) and Austria’s Barbara Hansel/Stefanie Schwaiger (9-6.

ON THE HORIZON
Placement points for the FIVB Olympic Rankings for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games continue for the next two weeks in Brazil. The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour resumes with the FIVB Rio Grand Slam (March 8-13) followed by the FIVB Vitoria Open (March 15-20). In all, Brazil is hosting five international events in 2016. In addition to Maceió, Rio and Vitoria will be the FIVB Fortaleza Open (April 26-May 1) and concluding with the 2016 Rio Olympic Games (Aug. 6-18).

GROWING HISTORY
The FIVB Rio Grand Sam in Brazil will be the 335th men’s tournament since the FIVB began play in 1987 and the 297th FIVB women’s tournament since they started competition in 1992.

FIVB 2016
Based in Lausanne, Switzerland as the international governing body for the Olympic sports of Beach Volleyball and Volleyball, the 2016 FIVB Beach Volleyball calendar featured a purse of US$9 million with a season that extended from last October to this October, competing at 23 venues in 13 countries. The schedule includes five FIVB Grand Slams, three Swatch FIVB Major Series events, 14 FIVB Opens and the special Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals in the United States. The showcase event will be the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil (Aug. 6-18).

The 2015 portion of the 2016 FIVB World Tour calendar started in October in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and included two more open events prior to the remainder of the schedule resuming at the FIVB Kish Island Open in Iran in February.

ROAD TO RIO
The Olympic qualification process began in 2015 with all FIVB World Tour events (except the Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals) in 2015 up until June 13, 2016 counting towards the Olympic Ranking in order to determine 15 spots for each gender that will take part in each 24-team field in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games on Copacabana Beach in Brazil in August. Counting the FIVB Kish Island Open, 13 men’s and 11 women’s events remain on the Olympic qualifying calendar for the FIVB World Tour.

FIVB WORLD TOUR PURSES
The FIVB Grand Slam and Swatch FIVB Major Series competitions, all double-gender, each have $800,000 in total purses. The total of $500,000 will be the purse for the Swatch FIVB World Tour Season Final which will feature the top eight teams in each gender and two wild card teams.

The 14 FIVB Open tournaments on 2016 calendar, 11 double-gender, and three men’s only, have $150,000 total purses for the double gender events and $75,000 for the single-gender competitions.

The gold medal teams in each gender at FIVB Grand Slam and Swatch FIVB Major Series events split $57,000, the silver $43,000, the bronze $32,000 and fourth place $24,000. The gold medal teams in each gender at FIVB Open tournaments each split $11,000, the silver $8,000, the bronze $6,000 and fourth place $4,500.

FIVB EVENT FORMAT
Implemented in 2013, the format of all the FIVB Beach Volleyball international tournaments – whether FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam or FIVB Beach Volleyball Open – are the same, featuring pool play followed by single elimination knockout rounds. Country Quota playoffs returned as needed in 2015 to determine the final teams for the qualification tournament.
