The Main Draw tournament will be played by 24 teams per gender, following the competition system that will be adopted at Olympic Games in Rio 2016. The Main Draw competition will be consisted of a Preliminary round of pool play in round robin, a lucky-loser round and a single elimination phase, for both genders.

Main Draw – Preliminary Round (Pool Play)

Six pools of four teams will play in the round robin system during the Preliminary round to determine 16 teams advancing to the ‘round of 16’ of single elimination phase. Allocation of teams in each pool will be in accordance with the Event Regulations and Specific Competition Regulations available at least -10 days prior to the start of the tournament.

Every team will play the three other teams in their pool. The ranking of teams within their pools will be determined by the total number of match points, with the following points awarded per match to each team:

Match won        2 points

Match lost        1 point

Match forfeited        0 points (21-0; 21-0)

The first two ranked teams from each pool, and the best two teams that ranked third in the pools (as per match points, set ratio and rally point ratios), will advance automatically to the ‘round of 16’ of single elimination phase. The four remaining third ranked teams in each pool will play a lucky loser round to determine the 2 winners that will also qualify to the single elimination phase, making a total of 16 teams.

Main Draw – Lucky-loser Round

The four remaining third ranked teams in each pool will play a lucky loser round. The 3rd ranked team (as per match points, set ratio and rally point ratios) will play again the 6th ranked team, while the 4th ranked team will play again the 5th ranked team. The winners of the two matches will qualify to the round of 16 of single elimination phase.

Main Draw – Round of 16

The “Round of 16” will be played in a single elimination format to qualify eight (8) teams for the quarterfinals.

Main Draw – Semi Finals and Finals

The four (4) winners of the quarterfinals will then advance to the semi-finals.

The winners of the semi-finals will play the gold medal match and the losers will play the bronze medal match.
