Martina Bonnerova back on the World Tour after break-up with Hermannova

Antalya, Turkey, October 21, 2015 – Martina Bonnerova is back. After her sudden and forced break-up with Barbora Hermannova this summer the 24-year old Czech player was a bit at loss what to do, but on Wednesday she returned to the World Tour courts at the FIVB Antalya Open with new found energy.

It must have been faith because in her first pool play match Bonnerova had to face her old partner at the other side of the net. Both girls looked a bit tense, but found their way into the game anyway. After putting up a good fight in the second set Bonnerova and her temporary partner Vendula Haragova lost 2-0 (21-13, 21-19) to Hermannova and Marketa Slukova.

“It was a little bit emotional for me”, Bonnerova admitted after the match. “It’s weird to play against each other, because we played together for a long time. For more than five years. Yesterday another Czech girl told me: Hey, what if you are in the same pool? And I was like it would be really a big coincidence and then it really happened and I couldn’t believe it. But I was more thinking that the pool was quite hard, no weaker teams.”

This summer Hermannova (24) was asked to team up with Czech star player Slukova, who had just broken up with her long-time partner Kristyna Kolocova. And she said yes. It was an unpleasant surprise for Bonnerova.

“It was a big shock for me, because it was halfway through the season and nobody told me anything. Just before practice I was told: Goodbye, I have a new partner. It was a big disappointment for me because we were good friends. So I didn’t expect it at all. Since then we have not been in contact.”

“But maybe everything bad happens for a good reason”, Bonnerova continued. “Maybe it is supposed to be like this. Maybe I will be happier with somebody else.”

Her last FIVB event goes back to July, where she and Hermannova placed 33rd at the Yokohama Grand Slam. “Since then I didn’t play any world tour, only Czech tournaments, with whoever could play with me. But I didn’t want to stop. I wanted to play and enjoy. And now I have found new positive energy that I didn’t have before.”

For the Antalya Open she received a wild card and teamed up with 34-year old Haragova, who has been playing volleyball in France for the past seven years as a middle blocker. She also competed on the beach, but only on national tours and she is a beach volleyball coach. For now she is the perfect partner for Bonnerova, radiating positive energy to her much younger player.

Bonnerova: “We had some weaker moments in both sets, where we lost too much points. But I am happy with this game. I have a good feeling about it. I enjoyed playing with Vendula, she is a very positive person and a hard worker. She gives me positive and good energy.”

What will happen after the Antalya Open is still uncertain for Bonnerova. “The federation still supports me, but it depends on the results. Luckily my sponsors stayed with me. They understand my situation. I have one more tournament in the Czech Republic, I will play with a younger girl, 20 years old. After that tournament I will talk about the future.”
