Brazil sweeps U19 World Championships gold medals

 

Porto, Portugal, August 3, 2014 - Brazil claimed both gold medals at the double gender FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships on Sunday in Porto.

 

Arthur Diego Mariano Lanci and George Souto Maior Wanderley defeated Ukraine’s Illia Kovalov and Oleh Plotnytskiy 2-1 (21-18, 21-23, 15-11) and Eduarda Santos Lisboa and Andressa Cavalcanti Ramalho were too strong for Germany’s Sarah Schneider and Lisa Arnholdt (21-14, 13-21, 19-17).

 

The bronze medals went to Jose Gregorio ‘Tigrito’ Gomez and Rolando ‘Peter’ Hernandez from Venezuela and Canada’s Megan and Nicole McNamara.


Key points

·       Brazil’s 16-year old Eduarda won back-to-back U19 titles, following the gold medal she won last year with Taina Silva Bigi.

·       Eduarda is the only player in the 13-year history of the U19 World Championships to accomplish this.

·       Before Brazil only Poland (2011) and Germany (2003) managed to win the gold medals in both the boys’ and girls’ U19 competition in the same year.

·       Germany is leading the girls’ medal table with 3 gold, 2 silver and 5 bronze.

·       Poland is leading the boys’ medal table with 4 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze.          


Brazilian debutants Arthur and George Wanderley win U19 World Championship

In only their first international event Arthur Diego Mariano Lanci and George Souto Maior Wanderley won a gold medal on Sunday. The Brazilians defeated Illia Kovalov and Oleh Plotnytskyi from Ukraine 2-1 (21-18, 21-23, 15-11) in the final of the FIVB U19 World Championships in Porto. Read more

First time finalists from Brazil and Ukraine in boy’s U19 gold medal match

Brazil’s Arthur Diego Mariano Lanci and George Wanderley Souto Maior reached the final of the FIVB U19 World Championships in only their first FIVB event. Brazil and Germany reach girls’ final at the U19 World Championships

Brazil’s Eduarda Santos Lisboa reached the final of the FIVB U19 World Championships in Porto for the second year in a row. She and Andressa Cavalcanti Ramalho will face Germany’s Sarah Schneider and Lisa Arnholdt in the gold medal match on Sunday. Read more

 

The U19 World Championships were the fourth and final FIVB age group event this season, following the U23, U17 and U21 World Championships. Some of the teams competing in Porto will travel to China next, for the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing (August 16-28).

 

Porto has hosted the U19 World Championships for the third time, following the 2010 and 2013 editions. Portugal has also hosted 22 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Open events, all held in Espinho. The FIVB U21 World Championships were staged on Porto Santo Island in 2004.
