2014 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour update after 10 events

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 21, 2014 — Using three venues for the first time during last week’s stop in the Netherlands, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) will now present the second of two FIVB Grand Slams with record US$1,000,000 purses on the calendar of its 2014 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour.

Following last week’s .prelude event to the multi-city 2015 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Champions in the Netherlands, the FIVB World Tour has returned to America for the second straight year after a 10 year absence for this week’s ASICS World Series of Beach Volleyball, a $1,000,000 FIVB Grand Slam being held in Long Beach, Calif..

Next week the tour returns to Europe for the $800,000 FIVB Klagenfurt A1 Grand Slam before taking a two-week break from competition.

Last week’s double-gender $1,000,000 FIVB The Hague Transavia Grand Slam saw Poland win the men’s and Brazil win the women’s gold medals. The USA and Brazil earned the other two men’s medals while Germany and Brazil captured the other two women’s medals in the sixth double-gender FIVB Grand Slam on the 2014 event calendar. The FIVB The Hague Transavia Grand Slam was the 10th event of the 2014 FIVB World Tour as well as being the sixth of 10 double-gender FIVB Grand Slam tournaments currently on the 2014 calendar.

THE HAGUE MEN
In the men’s competition in The Hague, winning the gold medal and first for their country in a thrilling three-set finale for the Poland was Grzegorz Fijalek/Mariusz Prudel over USA’s Phil Dalhausser/Sean Rosenthal as Poland earned their second medals of the 2014 FIVB World Tour and USA’s Dalhausser/ Rosental picked up there fourth medal. Capturing the bronze medal in an all-Brazilian match was Brazil’s Emanuel Rego/Pedro Salgado who defeated Brazil’s Buno Alison CeruttiOscar Schmidt. For Poland’s Fijalek/Prudel, it was their first FIVB gold medal.

THE HAGUE WOMEN
The women’s gold medal went to Brazil’s Taiana Lima/Fernanda Alves who defeated the previous week’s winner Germany’s Katrin Holtwick/Ilka Semmler in three sets. In the women’s bronze medal match, it was sweet revenge for Brazil’s Juliana Felisberta/Maria Antonelli stopped Czech Republic’s Kristyna Kolocova/Marketa Slukova in two sets. It was the sixth career FIVB individual gold medal for Brazil’s Lima and first for Alves..

MEN’S WINNERS MOVE UP
Last week’s FIVB The Hague Transavia Grand Slam men’s champions (Poland’s Fijalek/Prudel) are now seventh in the point standings of the 2014 FIVB World Tour and second on the earnings list following their massive, $70,000 gold medal payday in The Hague..

WOMEN’S WINNERS MOVE UP TOO
The FIVB The Hague Transavia Grand Slam women’s gold medal winners (new team of Brazil’s Lima/Alves) moved up to 17th in the season money standings.

Gold in last week’s FIVB The Hague Transavia Grand Slam earned $70,000 for the winning team in each gender to split with $52,000 split by each silver medal team, $40,000 split by each of the two bronze medalists and $30,000 split by each of the fourth place teams.

BIG SLATE
The 2014 FIVB World Tour will be in the third of four consecutive double-gender FIVB Grand Slams in the Long Beach. After Gstaad two weeks ago, the Netherlands last week, Long Beach, Calif. (USA) this week, this run will end next week in Klagenfurt, Austria.

MEN’S POINTS/EARNINGS
The top three teams in each gender at FIVB Grand Slam events receive 800, 720 and 640 points respectively on the 2014 FIVB World Tour.

USA’s Dalhausser/Rosenthal duo continues as the point leader with 4,100 points. Latvia’s Aleksandrs Samoilovs/Janis Smedins is second with 3,650 points in the men’s 2014 FIVB World Tour point standings followed by Brazil’s Alison Cerutti/Bruno Oscar Schmidt with 4,590, Brazil’s Emanuel Rego/Pedro Salgado fifth with 2,620 and tied for fifth are Italy’s Daniele Lupo/Paolo Nicolai and Spain’s Pablo Herrera/Adrian Gavira with 3,120 points.

In the 2014 FIVB World Tour men’s season earnings, the leading team continues to be USA’s Dalhausser/Rosenthal with $224,000 followed by Poland’s Fijalek/Prudel with $149,000, Brazil’s Alison/Schmidt with $118,000, Brazil’s Emanuel Rego/Pedro Salgado with 140,375 and Italy’s Lupo/Nicolai fifth with $130,000, Latvia’s Samoilovs/J. Smedins six with $128,500 and USA’s Lucena/Doherty seventh with $117,000.

WOMEN’S POINTS/EARNINGS
For the women, Brazil’s Juliana Felisberta/Maria Antonelli are still at the top with 4,480 points followed by China’s Fan Wang/Yuan Yue with 4,100, USA’s April Ross/Kerri Walsh Jennings with 3,820; Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk/Barbara Seixas with 3,780, Czech Republic’s Kristyna Kolocova/Marketa Slukova fifth with 3,360, Germany’s Karla Borger/Britta Buthe sixth with 3,080 and Germany’s Katrin Holtwick/Ilka Semmler seventh with 3,070.

In the 2014 FIVB World Tour women’s season earnings, continuing to lead is USA’s A. Ross/Walsh Jennings with $184,000 followed by Brazil’s Juliana/Antonelli with $165,375, Czech Republic’s Kolocova/Slukova with $152,000, Germany’s Holtwick/Semmler fourth with $143,000, China’s Fan Wang/Yuan Yue fifth with $141,175, Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk/Barbara Seixas sixth with $128,000 and Germany’s Borger/Buthe seventh with $125,375.

MEN’S FINAL FOURS
In nine men’s tournaments so far in 2014 on the FIVB World Tour 11 countries have at least one final four placement. With eight final four placements each to lead the way so far is Brazil (three silver medals, two bronze medals, three fourth places) with the United States second with seven (three gold medals, one silver, two bronze, one fourth). With four final four placements each are Latvia (two gold medals, one silver, one fourth) and Italy (two gold medals, one silver, one fourth). Switzerland has three final four placements (two bronze medals, one fourth) as does Germany (one bronze, two fourths). With two is Russia (one gold, one silver) and Poland (one gold, one silver) while Kazakhstan (fourth), Netherlands (bronze) and Mexico (bronze) have the other final four placements so far with one final four for each country.

WOMEN’S FINAL FOURS
In 10 women’s events to start the year, 10 countries have earned at least one final four finish. Brazil leads with 11 final four placements (two golds, four silvers, two bronzes and three fourths), Germany has nine final fours (three gold medals, three silvers, two bronzes and one fourth). China has four (one silver, two bronze, one fourth) along with as does the Czech Republic (two gold medals, one bronze, one fourth). The United States has three final four placements (three gold medals) as does Spain (one silver, two fourths). Netherlands has two final four finishes (one bronze, one fourth) along with Russia (one silver, one bronze) and Austria (one fourth) and Slovak Republic (one bronze) have one final four finish each.

MEN’S WINNING PERCENTAGE
Based on percentage, statistically, in men’s action after nine events, USA’s Dalhausser/Rosenthal leads with a 35-7 record (83.3% winning percentage) followed by Brazil’s Alison Cerutti/Bruno Oscar Schmidt with a 33-12 mark (73.3%), while third is USA’s John Hyden/Tri Bourne with a 29-11 mark (72.5%), fourth is Italy’s Lupo/Nicolai is 27-11 (71.1%), fifth is Latvia’s Samoilovs/J. Smedins with a 31-13 record (70.5%) and is Brazil’s Alvaro Filho/Ricardo Santos with 19-8 record (70.4%), and The 35 match wins by USA’s Dalhausser/Rosenthal is the most by any men’s team so far this season on the FIVB World Tour with Brazil’s Alison/Schmidt second with 33 and Latvia’s Samoilovs/J. Smedins fourth with 31 wins.

WOMEN’S WINNING PERCENTAGE
For the women to date following 10 2014 FIVB World Tour events, USA’s April Ross/Kerri Walsh Jennings continue to lead with a 35-4 record (89.7%) while second is Czech Republic’s Slukova/Kolocova with a 29-8 record (78.4%), third so far is Brazil’s Juliana/Antonelli with a 49-14 record (77.8%) while fourth is Brazil’s Talita Antunes/Taiana Lima with a 23-7 record (76.7%) and sixth is Germany’s Borther/Buthe with a 26-10 record (72.2%). The 49 match wins by Brazil’s Juliana/Antonelli is the most by any team on this year’s FIVB World Tour.
