The Republic of Korea women’s volleyball team have participated in all of the Olympic tournaments except for the Moscow 1980 and Barcelona 1992 Games. They defeated Hungary to win bronze in Montreal in 1976 and also came close to a medal on two occasions, losing the bronze medal matches to North Korea at Munich 1972 and to Japan at London 2012.
At the FIVB World Championship, Korea won bronze medals in 1967 and 1974, but have not been on the podium since. They also failed to qualify in the most recent edition in 2014. Korea won bronze medals in the first two editions of the FIVB World Cup in 1973 and 1977. On a continental level, they have won seven silver and 8 bronze medals at the Asian Championship. They have also won the gold twice at the Asian Games, in 1994 and 2014.
After missing out on the previous two editions, Korea returned to the FIVB World Grand Prix last year for their eighteenth appearance. They made the Final Four of Group 2 and beat Germany in five sets in the semi-finals before losing in straight sets to Poland in the final. Korea won bronze in 1997 after a 3-1 win over Japan in the deciding match of the finals pool.
