Russia claim 3-1 victory over Japan

Egor Kliuka celebrates a point in the match against Japan in Novi Sad.

Novi Sad, Serbia, June 1, 2019 - Russia defeated Japan 3-1 in the first match of day 2 of the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League in Novi Sad on Saturday.

Tuomas Sammelvuo, head coach of Russia: "About the performance it is better not to speak in this moment. We have to get better, especially in attack. But victories boost confidence, so it was necessary for us to win today."

Yuichi Nakagaichi, head coach of Japan: "They killed us with the block, 21 for them, only one for us. We have to be better, but even so we were pretty close to win the fourth set and tie the match 2-2. We move on - tomorrow we play France so we have to prepare as much as we can."

Egor Kliuka, Russia: "It is very hard for us to play the Japanese because they have a very different style of play to ours. And they defend well, they get balls on court, so it is always exhausting with them, and this one also was a very physical game. But finally I think we played as a team and that’s positive for us."
