Perugia on final stretch to host Women's VNL

Perugia marked its countdown to the 2019 FIVB Women's VNL Tournament 11-13 June at a Press Conference in the Umbrian capital.

Lausanne, Switzerland, April 10, 2019 - The Italian Volleyball Federation (FIPAV) and the City of Perugia entered the final stretch of their preparations to host a week of action in the Preliminary Round of the 2019 FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League with a Press Conference that set the tone for the big event.

Italy will host Bulgaria, Korea and Russia at Perugia's PalaBarton in Week 4 of pool play at this year's VNL, 11-13 June. This follows a Week 2 tournament in Conegliano Veneto with Italy, USA, the Dominican Republic and Serbia, 28-30 May.

"Together with President Cattaneo we asked ourselves why in Perugia," said Giuseppe Manfredi, vice-president of FIPAV. "Perugia is a city that breathes and lives volleyball, but has never before hosted an international level-competition. And this week the town is looking at celebrating Sir Safety Conada Perugia's potential qualification to the final of the Men's European Champions League in Berlin, as well as the promotion of Bartoccini as they seek the dream of promotion to the top women's championship. If these dreams become reality Perugia would be one of the few cities that can boast two teams in the top flight."

"And in June Perugia will get to host the team that gave us great emotions in Japan [at the 2018 FIVB World Championship]. It is a fantastic group that made all Italians dream and I'm sure they will continue to give emotions and bring many young people to this wonderful sport".

"I would like to thank Mayor Andrea Romizi who immediately showed interest in the project, as well as [FIPAV] President Pietro Bruno Cattaneo and Vice-President Manfredi," added Giuseppe Lomurno, President of the Regional Council of Umbria. "Obviously we should also mention the importance of the support of the Region, as well as the Umbrian Olympic Committee. "I would also like to thank the press that immediately took an interest in understanding the importance of the project and also the arbitration sector of the Regional Committee for the commitment and availability it is demonstrating. We see a great willingness to collaborate around us, just think of the patronage that the University of Perugia wanted to give us to symbolize how much the university is part of our city."

Italy head coach Davide Mazzanti, is also looking forward of leading the national team in Perugia.

"It will be wonderful for me to return to Perugia with the national team," he said. "Here I have had wonderful moments having won the 2009 Champions League. It is a city that is used to great volleyball, even if it is now male, it will be a pleasure to bring it back too to the women's sport. It will be a stage where we will meet teams that will change a lot, so it will be very important as we prepare for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament. My national team has certainly made a great journey, we have great talents in the team and we have a great staff where the health of the team is in the hands of two Umbrians, so I must say that I am also happy for them that the VNL will arrive in Perugia."
