The Republic of Korea (ROK) has competed in the Olympic Games eight times, but has not featured since the Sydney 2000 Games. The country’s best Olympic performance was fifth place at Los Angeles 1984.
In the 2014 FIVB World Championship, Korea did not progress beyond the first round and finished in seventeenth place overall. They missed out on qualification from their pool by two points, with their solitary win coming against bottom side Tunisia. This performance did not come close to matching their best World Championship finish of fourth in 1978, when they lost 3-1 to Cuba in the bronze medal match.
They have enjoyed success on the continental stage, winning four gold medals in the Asian Championship and three in the Asian Games.
Last year Korea finished sixth in World League Group 2 after pool play, with a 5-4 record, which led to them failing to make the Final Four.
