USA out to double their VNL wins against Turkey

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 16, 2018 - Pool hosts USA take on Turkey Wednesday in Lincoln, Nebraska, as both sides look for their second win in the Volleyball Natiomns League following victories on Tuesday over Poland and Italy respectively - but historically the Americans have the edge over Turkey with 10 wins in their last 12 encounters at world level.

Head-to-Head
• United States have won 10 of their previous 12 major world level encounters against Turkey.
• World level major competitions are: Olympic Games, World Championships, World Grand Prix, World Cup and Grand Champions Cup.
• Turkey beat United States 3-1 at the 2008 World Grand Prix and 3-2 at the 2014 World Grand Prix, both in the preliminary round.
• United States won in straight sets at the 2016 World Grand Prix, their only previous major world level meeting in the United States.
• Their most recent major world level encounter came at the 2017 World Grand Prix where USA won 3-1.

United States
• United States started their 2018 Nations League campaign with a 3-1 victory over Poland in front of a home crowd.
• At last season's World Grand Prix, United States won each of their first four matches. The fourth victory in that run came against today's opponents Turkey (3-1).
• United States have won each of their last nine major world level matches played on home soil, since a 3-0 defeat against Cuba at the 1996 World Grand Prix. That match was played in Honolulu.
• United States had two players on 20+ points in their victory over Poland: Michelle Bartsch-Hackley (27) and Jordan Larson (20).
• Rachael Adams scored five points from blocks against Poland, more than any other player.

Turkey
• Turkey won their first Nations League match in straight sets versus Italy.
• The last time Turkey started a major world level competition with consecutive victories was at the 2014 World Grand Prix: 3-0 versus Japan, 3-2 versus United States.
• Turkey have now won their last two major world level matches in straight sets as they also defeated Dominican Republic in their final match of the 2017 World Grand Prix. The only time Turkey won three consecutive world level matches by a 3-0 scoreline was at the 2003 World Cup (against Egypt, Argentina and Republic of Korea).
• Meryem Boz was Turkey's top scorer in their victory over Japan, netting 16 points.
