USA look to defend perfect head-to-head with Argentina

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 14, 2018 - Argentina host USA to wrap up pool play at the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Nations League with the 120th and very last match of the preliminary round, Thursday in Santa Fe. This match pits the standings leaders USA (on a 12-2 record) against bottom of the table Argentina (1-13). The South Americans have never beaten USA in seven previous encounters.

Head-to-Head
• Argentina are winless against the United States at major world level tournaments, losing all seven previous encounters.
• The women's world level major competitions are: the VNL, Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, World Grand Prix and Grand Champions Cup.
• United States have won all seven world level major competition matches against Argentina in straight sets, including their most recent encounter at the 2015 World Cup.
• USA also won 3-0 when the teams last met at the Pan American Games in 1995.

Argentina
• Argentina lost 3-0 to Serbia on 13 June, their 13th defeat at the VNL. Their only win came against Korea on 12 June (3-0).
• Argentina are the first team to record 13 defeats at a single major world level tournament. The previous record of 12 was set by Germany at the 1995 World Grand Prix and equalled by Germany at the 2001 World Grand Prix and by the Dominican Republic and Thailand at this year's VNL.
• Argentina could win multiple fixtures at a major world level tournament for the fourth time in their last five participations. They only failed to do so at the 2016 Olympic Games where they won only one match.
• Victoria Michel and Julieta Lazcano both scored three points from stuff blocks in Argentina's last match, against Serbia.

United States
• The United States won their 12th match at the VNL on 13 June, 3-0 versus Korea. They are among the six teams to have qualified for the Final Round.
• USA could win 13 matches at a single major world level tournament for the fourth time after the 1995 World Grand Prix (14 wins), the 2012 World Grand Prix (14) and the 2015 World Grand Prix (13).
• The United States (10) can equal the record of most straight-sets victories by a team at a single major world level tournament of 11, set by Brazil at the 2014 World Grand Prix.
• Against Korea, Kelly Murphy scored four of USA's seven points from serves.
• Michelle Bartsch-Hackley is USA's leading scorer at the VNL on 179 points.
