Germany seek first win over Korea in six years

 

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 19, 2018 - Korea and Germany, two of the teams that pulled off major upsets in the opening week of the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Nations League, go head-to-head Tuesday in Suwon with the hosts leading the series 19-5 and the Germans having last won six years ago.

Head-to-Head
• Korea have won 19 of the 24 matches against German teams at major world level tournaments.
• Against no other opponents have Korea won more matches at these tournaments.
• The women's world level major competitions are: the VNL, Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, World Grand Prix and Grand Champions Cup.
• Korea won the last three encounters versus Germany, despite losing the first set in all three matches.
• Germany's last win was a 3-0 at the 2012 World Grand Prix.

Korea
• Korea could win three matches in a row at world level major tournaments for the first time since a run of eight wins at the 2017 World Grand Prix.
• The final win in that run was the 3-2 against Germany. Republic of Korea lost their next seven matches at world level major tournaments.
• Eight of Korea's last nine matches at world level major tournaments were decided in straight sets (W1-L7). The exception was their 3-2 win against Dominican Republic in this year's VNL.
• Korea have won five of their last six major world level fixtures on home soil, including their last three (in Suwon). The only exception in this run was a 3-1 defeat to Serbia.
• In Suwon, Korea are unbeaten at major world level, winning three each at the 1997 and 2017 World Grand Prix.
• Yeon Koung-Kim is Korea's top scorer at the VNL on 60 points, including 29 in the match against Dominican Republic.

Germany
• Germany have a W1-L2 record after three matches in the VNL, losing the last two.
• Germany last suffered at least three consecutive defeats at world major tournaments at the World Grand Prix in 2016 and 2017 combined. The last loss in that run of 10 defeats was 3-1 against Republic of Korea.
• Germany have lost the opening set in each of their three matches in this VNL. The last time they won the first set was in a 3-1 win versus Czech Republic at the 2017 World Grand Prix.
• Louisa Lippmann is Germany's top scorer in the VNL on 47 points.
• Lisa Gruending scored a team high 12 points from blocks in the first three matches.
