His most successful stint was with Italy's men's National Team from 1989 to 1996, during which period they won silver at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games, two World Championships, three European Championships, a World Cup and five World League titles. He then took charge of Italy's women's team from 1997 to 1998. Velasco returned to the men's game with the Czech Republic from 2001 to 2003 and went on to have stints with Spain from 2009 to 2010 and Iran from 2011 to 2014.
